Taekwon-Do Encyclopedia is a martial art book that gives information about Taekwon-Do, was written 30 years ago by Gen. Choi Hong Hi, the founder of Taekwon-Do. The book which is consisted of 15 volumes in all, gives comprehensive and systematic explanation on theoretical and practical issues of Taekwon-Do including its origination, history, philosophy and ideal, tenets, advantages, technical components, method of training and equipment, and examination of degree and gup promotion. In the process of his research on Taekwon-Do from 1952 to 1983, Gen. Choi Hong Hi developed Taekwon-Do patterns into 24, whilst making philosophical clarifications to the essence, characteristics, mission and tenets inherent to the national martial of Korea. Based on thorough deliberations, the government of DPR Korea acknowledged the universal value of Taekwon-Do theory and techniques developed by Gen. Choi Hong Hi, and invested the fund to publish the first version of the encyclopedia (English version) in May 1985. 28 May marks the 30th anniversary of publication of the 1st version of Taekwon-Do encyclopedia. From 1985 to 2014, it was translated into English, Korean, Russian, Spanish, German, Chinese and other languages. From 1989, a book titled “Taekwon-Do”, the synthesized version that intensively integrated 15 volumes of Taekwon-Do Encyclopedia, was published, and thus making contributions to worldwide dissemination and extension of Taekwon-Do along with martial arts development of mankind. The government of DPR Korea registered 15 volumes of Taekwon-Do encyclopedia and “Taekwon-Do”, the synthesized version, on the list of the National Copyright.
